What does the Harbor Auto Cover summary cover, and what does it not?
A coverage summary is a map, not the territory. Here is what the current Harbor Auto Cover summary says, what only the policy schedule can settle, and why a $500 deductible replaced a $250 one.
The current Harbor Auto Cover summary describes collision and comprehensive cover with a $500 deductible, subject to the policy's exclusions and written schedule. It is offered through an insurance agency partner, not as a credit union deposit product. The summary does not settle liability limits, premium, eligibility, effective date or binding. Only the licensed agency can confirm those from the policy records. A prior leaflet described a $250 deductible; that leaflet is withdrawn.

What is in the summary?
Two kinds of cover and one number. The current Auto insurance coverage summary describes collision and comprehensive cover for the fictional Harbor Auto Cover product, with a $500 deductible, subject to the policy's exclusions and written schedule. It also says who offers the product: an insurance agency partner, not the credit union. Harbor Auto Cover is not a deposit product and is not part of the loan.
That is the whole of what a member-services colleague may cite. It is enough to answer the first question a member usually has, which is "roughly what does this cover and what would I pay first?"
What is not in the summary?
Most of what makes a policy a policy.
- Liability limits. They depend on the selected schedule and are not implied by the auto loan's credit tier. A top-tier borrower does not get a higher limit by being a top-tier borrower.
- Premium. Not in the summary.
- Eligibility, effective date and binding. The summary is explicit: a quote is not a binder. Only the licensed agency can confirm eligibility, premium, limits, effective date or binding.
- Exclusions beyond the ones listed. If a member asks about a loss the summary does not describe, the honest answer is that it is not described. Nobody on the desk should invent reassurance.
Why does "a summary is not a binder" matter?
Because the two sentences sound alike on a call. "Your car would be covered" and "the summary describes collision and comprehensive cover with a $500 deductible, and the agency confirms your schedule" are different promises. The first binds nothing and can mislead. The second is what we say.
What happened to the $250 deductible?
A prior product leaflet described it. That leaflet is withdrawn. The current summary and the current-quarter product change bulletin both say so, and the bulletin adds the rule for the desk: do not promise the old deductible to secure a referral. If a member has the older leaflet, we name it, explain that the current summary describes a $500 deductible, and move on. The leaflet is kept, marked superseded, the same way the lending desk keeps its withdrawn rate sheet.
Who confirms the final schedule?
The licensed agency, from the authorised policy records. That is my desk. A member-services representative may cite the summary and offer a referral. I check the records, confirm the schedule, and only then is anything bound. The credit union cannot confirm a premium, eligibility, binding or liability limits by reading the summary alone, and neither can a member.
Is the referral required?
No. An insurance referral is optional and must never be a condition of loan approval. We ask the member whether they want a referral before any authorised contact details change hands. The credit decision is one conversation. The agency conversation is another, and a member can decline it without touching the first.
How should a member read a coverage summary anywhere?
Look for three things. What the document calls itself: summary, schedule or policy. What it says about deductible and cover types. And what it says about who confirms the rest. If a document calls itself a summary and does not tell you who binds the policy, ask. At Harbor Mutual the answer is printed on it: the licensed agency.

Why is an insurance referral never a condition of a loan?
A credit union with an insurance agency desk has every incentive to bundle. We keep the two decisions apart on purpose, disclose the agency's role, and ask before passing a member along. Here is the reasoning.

What should a member ask before accepting a loan rate quote?
Four questions turn a number into a quote you can rely on: which sheet, which effective date, which term and tier, and what is still conditional. Here is how to ask them at any lender, including us.
