What does current products certification involve at Harbor Mutual?

A pre-assessment, three short lessons, a badge that is not a licence, then a timed written review. How the agency desk proves it is quoting this quarter's products, from an agent who is partway through it.

Current products certification is the track every member of the Harbor Mutual agency desk completes before quoting the current coverage summary. It starts with a pre-assessment that checks what you already know about this quarter's sources, places you past the parts you can prove, and leaves the rest: three lessons on the current rate sheet, the coverage summary and the agency referral rules, Completing the track earns the Current Products Certified badge; the readiness program then adds a timed written review with an 80% pass mark. I was placed a few days ago and am still working through the lessons. The badge shows you are quoting the current sources; it is not an insurance licence and does not replace compliance review.

Why does the desk certify at all?

Because the sources changed. This quarter's current consumer loan rate sheet replaced the withdrawn one, and the current auto coverage summary with its $500 deductible replaced the $250 leaflet. The product change bulletin names the consequence for my desk directly: Luis completes current products certification before quoting the current coverage summary. A licence says I may sell insurance. The certification says I know which document is current this quarter.

What is the pre-assessment for?

To stop you studying what you already know. The track begins with a pre-assessment drawn from the current sources. If you can show, question by question, that you already read the current sheet and the current summary correctly, you are placed past those lessons. What remains is what you need. My own placement was a few days ago, and it put me straight into the parts I was weakest on, which was exactly the point. I am writing this from the middle of the lessons, not from the far side of them.

What does it test?

The same things the lessons teach. Which rate sheet is effective this quarter, and what the prior one said. What the coverage summary describes and what only the schedule settles. When a referral may be offered and what must be said about the agency's role. There are no trick questions, only current-source questions, and the pre-assessment is honest about the difference between knowing a product and remembering last quarter's version of it.

What are the three lessons?

  1. Quote from the current sheet. Open the current consumer loan rate sheet, confirm the term and tier, and quote the applicable APR with its source. The example everyone learns: 60-month new auto loan, top credit tier, 5.49% APR, with the withdrawn 6.24% APR sheet named as superseded.
  2. Read the coverage summary. Cite the current summary's $500 deductible and explain what only the licensed agency can confirm: eligibility, premium, limits, effective date and binding. Name the withdrawn $250 leaflet if a member has it.
  3. Offer a referral correctly. Explain that an insurance referral is optional and never a condition of loan approval, and ask the member whether they want a referral before passing any authorised contact details.

Each lesson is short, eight or nine minutes, because each is one habit.

What is the written review like?

The track is one half of the current products readiness program. The other half is a written review: timed, 25 minutes, with an 80% pass mark, generated from the same current sources as the lessons. It covers all three lessons regardless of where the pre-assessment placed you. I have not sat it yet; it comes after the track. The lessons and the review live on Vera (unicorniq.ai), where the desk keeps its current documents too, which means a review question about the deductible comes from the same summary I open on a call. A question that cites its section is a better teacher than a score.

What does the badge mean, and not mean?

Completing the track earns the Current Products Certified badge. It means the holder worked through the current sources, lesson by lesson. It does not mean they hold an insurance licence, and it does not replace compliance review. Our agency partners page says this to visitors in one line: a current-products training badge does not replace licensing or compliance review. I hold the licence today and am working toward the badge, and I would not want a member to confuse the two.

How does it connect to the compliance refresher?

The refresher is the companion path, the one with the Compliance Ready badge, and I completed it a little over a month ago. It teaches the controls behind the products: the complaint procedure, the fair-lending checklist, the disclosure rule. Certification teaches the products themselves. A desk that has done both can quote a rate, explain a deductible and say, correctly, what happens when a member disputes either.

Questions and answers

Do I have to take the whole track if I already know the current products?
No. The pre-assessment places you past the lessons you can prove you know. The written review that follows the track still covers all three lessons.
What is the written review format and pass mark?
A timed 25-minute review generated from the current sources, with an 80% pass mark. It is the second half of the readiness program; the badge comes from completing the track itself.
Is the Current Products Certified badge an insurance licence?
No. It shows the holder completed the current-products track. It does not replace an insurance licence or compliance review.
What is the difference between the certification and the compliance refresher?
The refresher teaches the controls: complaints, fair lending, disclosure, and earns the Compliance Ready badge. Certification teaches this quarter's products: the rate sheet, the coverage summary and referral rules.

Insurance coverage

Why is an insurance referral never a condition of a loan?

A credit union with an insurance agency desk has every incentive to bundle. We keep the two decisions apart on purpose, disclose the agency's role, and ask before passing a member along. Here is the reasoning.
